"Negaraku" is the national anthem of Malaysia. Before its independence, the national anthem of Malaya was the British national anthem, God Save the Queen.
"Negaraku" was selected as a national anthem at the time of the Federation of Malaya's independence from Britain in 1957 by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia who is also known as Malaysia's 'Father of Independence'.Tunku headed a group of judges at the Depoh Police Hall in Kuala Lumpur to decide on which of the four songs that the Royal Police Band presented. Terang Bulan,"> the state anthem of Perak was chosen for having Malay cultural elements. After the board of Malay Kings had given their favour on the decision made by the judges, the lyrics were re-composed by Saiful Bahari based on the Terang Bulan.
The same tune was once the State Anthem of Perak and it was also the tune of a very popular contemporary song entitled "Terang Bulan"., which had a similar melody to the keroncong-influenced "Terang Boelan ", a popular song in the 1930s in Indonesia and Malaya.
However, there is a Hawaiian song titled "Mamula Moon" released in 1947 share the same tune with "Terang Bulan". By reading the official version of the history of National Antheme , which talk a lot about the origin of Perak Antheme, it does not reference this Hawaiian song. I wonder however, since both songs talk about the moon...maybe they share a common ancestry.
Terang Bulan (State Anthem of Perak)
Dilanjutkan, Allah usianya Sultan,
Adil dan murah, memerintah watan,
Ditaati rakyat kiri dan kanan,
Iman yang soleh Allah kurniakan,
Allah berkati Perak Ridzuan,
Allah selamatkan negeri dan Sultan.
